The Principal’s Message

Our Homecoming venue, the Des Moines Beach Club Auditorium, was the place to be on Saturday night.  Nearly 300 sharply-dressed students absorbed the booming music to dance underneath the visible spectrum of disco-party lights.  I was delighted to see our classy students break away for an evening of fun after working very hard throughout the first academic quarter.  Thank you to everyone who helped make Homecoming 2015 a memorable and wonderful event.

I also want to thank the students who brought their concerns to me regarding the changes to our admission’s process.  Last week, the Highline School District publicly announced a shift in policy and practice.  These changes impact prospective students and their families beginning with the Class of 2020.  A few details remain under development, but the most significant change to RAHS admissions is the selection of qualified applicants through a lottery drawing.

The Highline School District is unifying the admissions process for schools in Highline that require an application. This includes Big Picture Schools, CHOICE Academy and Raisbeck Aviation High School. “We are seeing more students apply for these schools which is a direct result of the success of our programs. We believe these changes will streamline the application process for our students and families," said Superintendent Susan Enfield.

While the process is more uniform, each application reflects the unique educational program at each school. The primary change is the addition of a lottery to select students from a pool of eligible candidates. In order for applicants to be entered into the lottery they must:
  • Submit a complete application during the application window (January 4 – 29, 2016).
  • Meet the criteria for success in the unique educational program at the school.
  • Commit to the program, after being fully informed about the benefits and expectations.
  • Agree to participate in an interview if selected in the lottery.
If selected in the lottery, school staff will meet with the applicant and a parent or guardian to confirm that they fully understand the program and are prepared to commit to it.

In the case of RAHS, the specifics of the application were developed with feedback from the leadership of the school and The Museum of Flight. The modifications in the admissions process are designed to accommodate the growing number of applications, while maintaining RAHS’ high quality, STEM-focused educational program.
The RAHS lottery will consist of three segments:
  • Highline: 55 seats (51%) will be drawn from applications submitted by students residing in our district boundaries.
  • Seattle: 20 seats will be drawn from applications submitted by students residing in the Seattle School District boundaries.
  • Other: 30 seats will be drawn from applications submitted by students not residing in the Highline or Seattle boundaries.
Each school will accept applications for the next school year from January 4 – 29, 2016.  An application will be posted on the RAHS website beginning on January 4.

If there are more applications than space available, the district will hold a lottery drawing for all qualified students.  Applicants who complete the full application, including an essay that responds to the prompt describing how they developed an interest in aviation/aerospace are eligible for the lottery drawing. Essays that are flagged as incomplete or unresponsive to the prompt will be reviewed by Superintendent Enfield to determine if the application will be advanced to the lottery.  Qualified students will be admitted into one of three priority groups for the lottery.

Priority Group #1

Fifty-one percent of the seats for each freshman class (approximately 55) are reserved for students who live within the boundaries of Highline Public Schools. Students who fall into this category will be placed in lottery category #1 and chosen first. Students in lottery category #1 who are not chosen in the initial lottery will be placed on a waitlist in the order their names are drawn. If Highline students who are chosen in the lottery choose not to enroll in RAHS, their seats will be filled through the Highline waitlist until there are no students left on that waitlist. Any additional openings will be filled by the waitlist for lottery category #3.

Priority Group #2

Twenty seats are reserved for students who reside within the boundaries of Seattle Public Schools. Students who fall into this category will be placed in lottery category #2 and chosen second. Students in lottery category #2 who are not chosen in the initial lottery will be placed on a waitlist in the order their names are drawn. If Seattle students who are chosen in the lottery choose not to enroll in RAHS, their seats will be filled through the Seattle waitlist until there are no students left on that waitlist. Any additional openings will be filled by the waitlist for lottery category #3.

Priority Group #3

All students from other districts will be placed into lottery category #3.
Thirty remaining seats will be filled by pulling names from lottery category #3. Students in lottery category #3 who are not chosen in the initial lottery will be placed on a waitlist in the order their names are drawn. If students from lottery category #3 are chosen in the lottery choose not to enroll in RAHS their seats will be filled through the lottery category #3 waitlist.

Community Forum on Safety in Sports - Monday, November 16, 2015, 7:00-8:30 PM, Highline Performing Arts Center 401 South 152nd Street, Burien, 98148.  Join Q13 anchor Marni Hughes as she moderates a panel discussion focused on safety in sports with an emphasis on signs, symptoms and treatment of head injuries.  The panel discussion will be followed by questions from the audience.  Parents, coaches and players are encouraged to attend.  The event is open to the public.

Safety Issues
Lately, more parents are doing unsafe U-turns in front of the bus zone area.  Please do not make U-turns here, but turn around at the west end of the building.  Our student drivers with learner permits need a positive example, and safe passage as they drive in front of the school.  Thank you for your assistance with our effort to keep everyone safe.

Students, for your safety, please adhere to cross walk signal on East Marginal Way South. If the flashing amber crosswalk light is blinking, do not start into the crosswalk. The school busses cannot take a free right turn while students are in the crosswalk.  If a bus is not waiting to make a right turn, you likely walked up behind a vehicle waiting and entered the driver’s blind spot.  Thank you parents and students for helping us with these two safety concerns.

Our Success Dean, Mr. Nick Anderson provides services for students.  He will be tutoring freshmen on Tuesday afternoons from 3:30 – 5:30 PM and sophomores, juniors and seniors on Wednesdays from 3:30 – 5:30 PM.  The sessions will be held in Mr. Hoehne’s classroom, 3510.

  1. This place is stunning. The architecture is beautiful and the decoration is spectacular. Environment was transparent and resonant and warm and immediate. I loved LA venues and my experience here was very exciting.
