The Principal’s
Message
On Saturday night, my wife and I were seated under the delta-winged
Blackbird SR-71 for dinner. The landing gear of the Mach
3.2 reconnaissance aircraft silhouetted
behind the soft blue lights transformed the auction dinner into an enchanting
experience. Thank you to everyone, especially our 23 sponsors for their
generous support. Driven by the PTSA leadership, this year, the auction
team doubled the number of RAHS sponsors!
The lavish support given by these
partners offers unmatched opportunities for students, and propels the mission of
our innovation school forward.
Please join me in thanking this year’s sponsors: Alaska
Airlines, Boeing Company, Galvin Flying, Scott and Linda Carson, ALPA, The Museum of
Flight, AEROTEC, Molen Orthodontics, True Built Homes, Aviation Partners Boeing,
Lyon Technical Services, UPS, Kids at Play Therapy, Taylor and Doug Evans, BRALCO
Metals, Rodgers, Deutsch & Turner Attorneys, Cliff and Sandy Shettler, Wallingford Financial & College
Planning, West Seattle Design Build, Kanemasu, Kryman, and Kennedy families,
and Eye 5 Optical.
A stellar auction requires savvy planning, skilled organization,
and superb execution. I want to
acknowledge the champions of the event, our Auction Chairs, Emily
Thatcher and Kellie Araki. This dynamic duo, and their team of ace volunteers,
succeeded in making the entire evening sparkle. I hope everyone enjoyed the
evening, and gets a chance to express their appreciation to Emily and Kellie.
A special salute is also due to Mr. Hoehne, who served as the emcee, and teamed up with KOMO newscaster, and auctioneer, Mr. Brad Goode. With tremendous
skill and showmanship, Brad motivated the crowd of 440+ to bid cheerfully and charitably. During the Fund-A-Need segment of the live auction,
the pledges poured in, and the amount totaled $38,500. Wow! The
money raised from Fund-A-Need directly supports our Career Readiness Program, Science Olympiad Team, Speech and Debate Team,
and Skunkworks Robotics Team.
A signature event like the auction attracts fresh interest
about our instructional program. This
Thursday evening, November 12, prospective students and their families arrive to
learn more about RAHS during our Information Night. I am asking for help to spread the word that visitors
should arrive early, and plan to park at the Museum of Flight. Typically, each Information Night attracts several
hundred people, and this year; and our parking lot cannot accommodate the expected
number of vehicles. This is the first Information Night for the Class of
2020!
On
Wednesday, November 11, we pause to honor our veterans. I encourage you to display your gratitude for
our nation’s freedoms and find a way to thank a veteran. I selected and copied a portion of President
Obama’s 2014 proclamation for Veteran’s Day to close the Principals’
Message.
“Since
the birth of our Nation, American patriots have stepped forward to serve our
country and defend our way of life. With honor and distinction, generations of
servicemen and women have taken up arms to win our independence, preserve our
Union, and secure our freedom. From the Minutemen to our Post-9 /11 Generation,
these heroes have put their lives on the line so that we might live in a world
that is safer, freer, and more just, and we owe them a profound debt of
gratitude. On Veterans Day, we salute the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines,
and Coast Guardsmen who have rendered the highest service any American can
offer, and we rededicate ourselves to fulfilling our commitment to all those
who serve in our name.
Across
our country, veterans who fought to protect our democracy around the globe are
strengthening it here at home. Once leaders in the Armed Forces, they are now
pioneers of industry and pillars of their communities. Their character reflects
our enduring American spirit, and in their example, we find inspiration and
strength.”

NEW ANNOUNCEMENTS
INVEN TEAM
Created by the Lemelson-MIT Program, the
InvenTeam initiative provides opportunities for high school students to
cultivate their creativity, curiosity, and problem-solving abilities and apply
lessons from science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) subjects to
invent technological solutions to real-world problems.
InvenTeams of high school students, teachers, and mentors will receive grants of up to $10,000 to invent a technological solution to a problem of their choice. Projects can range from an assistive device to an environmental technology and to a consumer good. Applicants are encouraged to consider the needs of the world's poorest people — those earning $2 or less a day — when brainstorming ideas, as well as the potential for community partnerships and other types of collaboration.
Initial applications are due March 7, 2016. Upon review, selected applications will be invited to submit full proposals by September 6, 2016.
Complete application and eligibility guidelines, including profiles of past InvenTeams, are available at— http://philanthropynewsdigest.org/rfps/rfp6079-lemelson-mit-program-announces-2016-inventeam-initiative-to-cultivate-high-school-student-creativity

Safety Issues
Lately,
more parents are doing unsafe U-turns in front of the bus zone area. Please do not make U-turns here, but turn
around at the west end of the building. Our
student drivers with learner permits need a positive example, and safe passage
as they drive in front of the school.
Thank you for your assistance with our effort to keep everyone safe.
Students,
for your safety, please adhere to cross walk signal on East Marginal Way South.
If the flashing amber crosswalk light is blinking, do
not start into the crosswalk. The school busses cannot take a free right turn
while students are in the crosswalk. If
a bus is not waiting to make a right turn, you likely walked up behind a
vehicle waiting and entered the driver’s blind spot. Thank you parents and students for helping us
with these two safety concerns.
