The Principal’s
Message
On Saturday morning,
the party guests arrived at RAHS! The
guests were handed kazoos to hum Happy Birthday to Peter Morton, and there was plenty to eat and drink as we marveled
over the Boeing 787 and B-17 being carefully tugged into the Aviation Pavilion. Standing in the central stairwell on the third
floor, we now enjoy a spectacular view of the 787 Dreamliner.
The week of October 19-23 is a cause for more celebration.
A record number of VIPs begin arriving
on Wednesday, and by the end of the week, more than 75 distinguished guests
will interact with our community. As an
RAHS ambassador, it is important to know who is on the VIP list, and the
purpose for visit. Consider the interactions with distinguished guests as authentic
opportunities to develop your soft skills—more about that following the
day-by-day breakdown:
Wednesday— Dr. Kristi Morgansen, UW professor in
the Aero & Astro department—to discuss new linkages to the University of
Washington, Roger Swann, president
of the Boeing Employees Amateur Radio Society—to explore using the BEARS
communication center for tracking satellites, Melissa Edwards, WAS Director, and Ms. Reba Gilman, Vice President of Education at The Museum of
Flight—to deliver a presentation to juniors about the Washington Aerospace
Scholars program during Wednesday’s advisory period.
Thursday—members
from the House Committee on Education, House Committee on Technology and
Economic Development, House Committee on Higher Education, Office of Program
Research, Legislative Staff, Association for Career and Technical Education,
and Workforce Training & Coordinating Board—following up on Rep Tomiko-Santos’ inquiry into our mentor
and internship programs.

Dr. John Wensveen, Head of Aviation Technology at Purdue University, and Casey Hendrickson, Purdue University staff member—to introduce Purdue’s certificate program during the Aviation Careers and Introduction to Aerospace Engineering classes.
Friday—
approximately 45 visitors, including
the Pathfinder honorees, and representatives from Purdue, University of North
Dakota, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Raisbeck Engineering, and Peter Morton, former VP of the Boeing
company—for the Pathfinder luncheon.
While the Pathfinder meeting
will be held in the PLC, many guests are likely to arrive early and want a
campus tour. I am, therefore, asking all
students to wear your regular Monday-Thursday school dress for this Friday. Thank you for you cooperation!
Along with you, I am deeply
honored by the distinguished guests paying a visit to our school. As you interact
with business, civic, and education leaders, remember the interactions reflect genuine
opportunities to develop your soft skills. Think of soft skills as a cluster of personality traits,
communication, personal habits, friendliness, and optimism that characterize relationships
with other people.
Connecting
with people lies at the center of soft skills.
At RAHS, you have witnessed our emphasis on firm hand shakes, good eye
contact, and taking the initiative to introduce yourself. The students participating on Wednesday’s
etiquette training will receive timely instruction about another dimension of soft
skills—tied to formal dinner conversations and appropriate table manners. Like learning to ride a bicycle, soft skills
are developed through practice. Step forward this week and welcome a VIP to
RAHS with a firm handshake, and remember to smile with your eyes. You will improve your abilities to connect
with others, and develop personal confidence through each handshake.
A
comparison offers a succinct way to suggest that soft skills are transferable
life skills. While you may have to go
back to school to learn new technical skills if you change careers, you can
always take your soft skills with you since they are valued in nearly every
career field.
The Principal’s Round of Applause—acknowledging those who make RAHS a better place.
Regina
Ciurczak, Dana Husby, Robin Raymond, Dana Sones, the PTSA Staff Appreciation Team—for
providing a delicious lunch for the staff last Tuesday.
Isha
Singh, Mr. Joshi, and Ms. Wombold—for representing RAHS at the
first Education Advisory meeting for the Boeing Academy of STEM Learning.
Dane Anders, Annelene
Belknap, Felix Bosques, Kat Brunson, Nicole Diaz,
Miles Durnwirth, Steph
Glascock, David Hadley, Hunter Jorgensen, Alex Kanemasu,
Erin Magarro, Amelia
McCahill, Victoria McSmith, Henry Meyerson, Avni Mungra,
David Nguyen, Olivia
Tagorda, Lucas Thomson, and Connor Whitlock—for serving as superb student
Ambassadors during The Museum of Flight’s 787 Rollover Event.
Ms. McEwen—for supporting and
enjoying The Museum of Flight’s 787 Rollover Event.
Kara
De Leon, David Johnston, Hailey Johnston, and Johnston Means, our
National Honor Society Leadership Team—for organizing a tremendously successful
blood drive.
Joe Merlino—who completed his check ride for his private pilot’s
license.
Gayle &
Lois Dobish, grandparents of Josh Husby—for donating a beautiful piano to
RAHS, and thereby enhancing our school culture.
I am honored to serve as your
Principal—Bruce Kelly

Robotics
Skunk Works invites you to attend our Spaghetti Dinner and
Auction to be held here at RAHS on Friday, October 23. Doors open at 5:30
with dinner being served at 6pm. Tickets at the door are $20 which
includes a generous dinner of spaghetti, meatballs, salad, bread, and
beverages, but the real treat is our dessert auction run by our own auctioneer,
Mr. Troy Hoehne. Come support the Skunks!
Skunk Works Scout Robotics Merit Badge Clinic – A
Robotics Merit Badge clinic will be held on Saturday, November 21st, 2015. This
is an excellent opportunity for Boy and Girl Scouts (6th-12th

is being hosted by Skunk Works Robotics and PTSA. It will be held at Raisbeck
Aviation High School from 9am-3pm and will be limited to 100 Scouts. Cost is
only $5. For more details, contact Skunks.RoboticsMB@gmail.com
The
Museum of Flight extends an invitation to RAHS students to
attend their Spacefest event on November 6.
They have a variety of things going on that day. The event is free with admission and is open
to the general public, feel free to let others know. A link to the agenda will be available next
week.
Safety Issues
Lately,
more parents are doing unsafe U-turns in front of the bus zone area. Please do not make U-turns here, but turn
around at the west end of the building. Our
student drivers with learner permits need a positive example, and safe passage
as they drive in front of the school.
Thank you for your assistance with our effort to keep everyone safe.
Students,
for your safety, please adhere to cross walk signal on East Marginal Way South.
If the flashing amber crosswalk light is blinking, do
not start into the crosswalk. The school busses cannot take a free right turn
while students are in the crosswalk. If
a bus is not waiting to make a right turn, you likely walked up behind a
vehicle waiting and entered the driver’s blind spot. Thank you parents and students for helping us
with these two safety concerns.
Our Success Dean—Mr.
Nick Anderson, returns to provide support services for students beginning
on October 27. Six
years before coming to RAHS, Mr. Anderson tutored college students in grammar
and college writing. He said that he enjoys working with smaller groups of
students and coming up with ways to break down concepts—making them easier to
understand. Mr. Anderson has served as our Success Dean for the last two
years, and is excited to return. His specialties include organizational skills,
writing essentials, and keys to time management. Students can elect to attend one of Mr.
Anderson’s support sessions, or be referred by Ms. Carper or their teacher.
