The Principal’s Message

Can you make a connection between these famous twosomes?
They share a common bond:  Obi-Wan Ben Kenobi—Luke Skywalker, Warren Moon—Russell Wilson, Hayden—Beethoven, and Socrates—Plato.  The answer:  a mentor—mentee relationship.  Although January is designated as National Mentor Month, at RAHS, our first mentor breakfast for the school year arrives on Wednesday at 7:30AM.  If you wish to be assigned a mentor, please visit Mr. Davolt in the career readiness center.

The majority of RAHS students are paired with a mentor from the aviation/aerospace industry during their sophomore year.  Over the course of the school year, there are five mentor breakfasts.
Mr. Davolt brokers the mentor-mentee connection, and your first mentor encounter might happen at Wednesday’s breakfast.

Students, learning to make a good first impression is a critical life skill.  Here’s a practical tip to get your mentor-mentee relationship off to a magnificent start. Take the initiative and call, email, or text your mentor today, and let them know that you look forward to seeing them on Wednesday.  Your initiative to communicate almost guarantees that your relationship gets off to a solid start.  Most mentors have a preferred method of communication—ask them to find out.  Frequent and clear communication is an employability standard, and models professional conduct.

Remember to make the most of each meeting and have fun.  Learn about your mentor’s career, education pathway, and hobbies. Share your career aspirations, dreams for college, and personal interests.  Again, your initiative to call, email, or text today will impress them.

Our mentor program has impressed key elected officials in Olympia.  Representative Tomiko-Santos, chair of the House Committee on Education, along with a delegation from the National Conference of State Legislators, visited RAHS last August—for a presentation on our career readiness program.  Rep. Santos continues to be very enthusiastic about the presentation, and is returning on October 22.  She has invited members from the House Education and Higher Education Committees, and The House Technology and Economic Development Committee to hear the same presentation, but asked for an emphasis on our mentor-mentee practices.  The visit is a tremendous honor for our school, and pays tribute to the industry professionals who volunteer their time and expertise to support RAHS students and staff.
Is there a mentor-mentee-mentor cycle under development?  The pipeline of RAHS mentors is filled with two alumni—who completed their college degrees, and are now employed in the aviation/aerospace industry.  They have returned to RAHS to give back.  Ten years henceforth, I believe students from the Classes of 2016-2019 will follow in their footsteps.  It is a wonderful example to inspire everyone.

The Principal’s Round of Applause—acknowledging those who make RAHS a better place.

Najma Hashi and Braeden Swanson—for being elected by their peers as Freshmen Senators, and stepping up to lead the Class of 2019.

Payton Adams, Anna Horner, Matthew Morin, Avni Mungra, David Nguyen, Hong Ta, and Heidi Yagen—for campaigning as a senator and stepping forward to lead the Class of 2019.

Katie Burrell, Amelia McCahill, Steven Do, and Vlad Nazarov—for leading the VIP tour of visitors from Kitsap Peninsula School District, Olympic College, and Green River Community College.

Aaron Abeyta, Kat Brunson John Copeland, Ian Demaree, Abigail Gilbaugh, Brendan Good Andrew Gong, Eric Jones, Jade Jordan, William Smith, Nicholas Tucker—for supporting the presentation and the tour for the delegation from Camas School District.

Dan Hrehov, Mike Shafa, Mr. Davolt, Ms. Jones—Gunn, and Ms. Nurzhanov—for supporting the presentation to the Camas School District.

I am honored to serve as your Principal—Bruce Kelly

NEW ANNOUNCEMENTS
Student Volunteers Needed – Five student volunteers are needed to have lunch with the League of Education Voters Board of Directors.  The meeting will take place at noon on Friday, October 9, 2015 at the Museum of Flight.  October 9 is a non-school day for students so you will be volunteering to participate on your own free time.  The League of Education Voters is an Education Advocacy organization that works to improve education.  Their board is conducting strategic planning and they thought it would be helpful for them to hear from students.  Your input will ground the board in the realities for students today.  Please see Mrs. McEwen if you want to volunteer.

Opportunity to Serve as Student Ambassadors – a few more are still needed
The Museum of Flight will host a VIP reception at our school on Saturday, October 17, 2015.  The occasion is a celebration as the 787 rolls over from the museum and is installed in the new Aviation Pavilion.  There will be approximately 100 guests in our school building.  The museum invites RAHS students to serve as Student Ambassador Tour guides for guests interested in touring our school.  We will need ten to twelve student volunteers.  The time is 10 AM to 2 PM.  Dress is regular Monday through Thursday dress.  The people attending the event are considered VIPs.  Brunch will be served and the Student Ambassadors will have the opportunity to eat and mingle with the museum’s guests.  Please contact Mrs. McEwen if you are interested in serving as a Student Ambassador for this event.

Robotics:  Chezy Champs Update
The Skunks took a road trip down to San Jose, California September 17-21 for the off-season event Chezy Champs, where we had the opportunity to play with the best in the west. We were the only team out of state which was really cool to be able to work with such amazing teams. Such as the hosting team 254 The Cheesy Poofs who are a world winning team. After a long drive, we set up and got ranked 7th by noon on Sunday. At alliance selections we ended up being the 4th seed alliance captain! Along with teams 3309 and 841. We made it all the way to the Semi-final bracket, where we lost by only 4 points with a score of 232 to 236. Last year we got knocked out in quarter finals, so this is a step up from how well we did last year. Our team went and stunk it up and had a blast in the sun!
