The Principal’s
Message
Inspiration
Begins Here! Anyone peering outside the
south side windows at RAHS can see why The
Museum of Flight lives up to its billing.
As the Aviation Pavilion project nears a construction milestone, RAHS students
and staff have been invited to the preview opening. The event will take
place this Friday, October 16, 2015 at
4:00PM. We will join Museum of Flight staff, volunteers and docents to
become the first to walk upon the floors of the Aviation Pavilion. The
museum staff is promising “yummy treats” for us, and I hope you will plan to attend.
To access the invitation, click on the following link, https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B6KidurL9QDGUmJHWTNMRDd2LXc/view?usp=sharing
Since 2006, The Museum of
Flight has sponsored the Washington
Aerospace Scholars (WAS). The Aerospace Scholars program inspires high-school
juniors through a two-phase, immersive educational experience focused on topics
in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Phase One is an five-month distance learning
course designed in partnership with NASA and the University of Washington, and provides
students the opportunity to earn five
college credits. Top scoring students in Phase One receive an invitation to
participate in a six-day summer residency held at The Museum of Flight. Current RAHS juniors are invited to an
informational session with WAS director, Melissa
Edwards on Wednesday, October 21st
during Advisory. Students who are
considering the WAS program should note that the applications are due November 6, and can be downloaded at http://www.museumofflight.org/was.
Congratulations are in
order to all 74 students who were selected to attend this year’s Pathfinder Gala. This special evening
will inspire everyone through the life stories of three Northwest
visionaries who have made significant contributions to the aerospace industry.
This year, the Pathfinder Awards recipients are the late NASA astronaut Michael P. Anderson, aviation and
tourism entrepreneur Elling Halvorson,
and The Boeing Company and Ford Motor Company leader Alan Mulally. If you were not selected, I hope you will
apply again next year and also stay tuned for additional opportunities to
attend gala-type events. Please consider
the Joe Sutter Dinner Lecture on November
14 at The Museum of Flight—see Mr. Davolt if interested.
Our vibrant partnership with The Museum of
Flight offers unrivaled experiences to be inspired throughout the academic and
calendar year. I have noted RAHS staff
and students seizing many rewarding opportunities through the Museum. In addition to the special events and class
visits, last year, 57 students devoted more than 2100 hours as Gallery Ambassadors, Crew Compartment Access Guides, or served
in the Museum Apprenticeship Program.
I am indebted to our fantastic partnership with The Museum of Flight. Students, thank you for taking full advantage of the Museum’s Inspiration Begins Here campaign—your example inspires me!
The Principal’s Round of Applause—acknowledging those who make RAHS a better place.
Maryam
Shafa and Owen Yeasting—for being nominated by the staff as
Rotary Students of the Month.
Ian
Demaree, Senay Emmanuel, Abbey Gilbaugh, Josh Sherbrooke, and Kaeden Wile —for
participating in the League of Education Voters breakfast at the Museum of
Flight.
Hannah
Kaiser—for providing a last-minute VIP tour of RAHS to Doug King,
President/CEO of the Museum of Flight and his guest.
Dr.
Edgerton—for volunteering his piloting skills and supporting Flying
It Forward 2015—Girls Take Flight.
All 86
students who gave blood during the Puget Sound Drive last Thursday!
I am honored to serve as your
Principal—Bruce Kelly
FROM THE SCHOOL DISTRICT
We want to get your feedback and hear your ideas for our
schools and our students.
This year, we're launching a new way for you to tell us
what is on your mind. ThoughtExchange is an online, two-way conversation.
Tell us what is important to you, and share your ideas
for making our schools better. See what others are saying, too, and find out
what is important to our community as a whole.
Our community is being invited to
participate in a three-step process:
- Share – answer open-ended questions about our schools
- Star – review ideas from others and place a star on the ideas you like best
- Discover – learn what is important to the community as a whole
On Friday, October 9, you have should
receive an email with an invitation to participate. If you would like to participate
and have not yet received the invitation, please join the conversation here.
If you have questions, please send us an email at: shareyourthoughts@highlineschools.org.
If you have questions, please send us an email at: shareyourthoughts@highlineschools.org.
We look forward to hearing your thoughts!

NEW ANNOUNCEMENTS
Safety
Issues
Lately, more parents are doing unsafe U-turns in front of
the bus zone area. Please do not make U-turns
here, but turn around at the west end of the building. Our student drivers with learner permits need
a positive example, and safe passage as they drive in front of the school. Thank you for your assistance with our effort
to keep everyone safe.
Students,
for your safety, please adhere to cross walk signal on East Marginal Way South.
If the flashing amber crosswalk light is blinking, do
not start into the crosswalk. The school busses cannot take a free right turn
while students are in the crosswalk. If
a bus is not waiting to make a right turn, you likely walked up behind a
vehicle waiting and entered the driver’s blind spot. Thank you parents and students for helping us
with these two safety concerns.
Our Success Dean—Mr.
Nick Anderson, returns to provide support services for students beginning
on October 27. Six
years before coming to RAHS, Mr. Anderson tutored college students in grammar
and college writing. He said that he enjoys working with smaller groups of
students and coming up with ways to break down concepts—making them easier to
understand. Mr. Anderson has served as our Success Dean for the last two
years, and is excited to return. His specialties include organizational skills,
writing essentials, and keys to time management. Students can elect to attend one of Mr.
Anderson’s support sessions, or be referred by Ms. Carper or their teacher.

excel in life and academics in the local school districts. As you all may
already know, the statistics for our young males of color (African American,

regards to them achieving in the current education system. We know that
there are many barriers and challenges that they are faced with, in and out of
the school environment. The Summits objectives are to help the young men:
· Critique social
structures that inhibit Black/Brown young men from being successful in
Education
· Highlight the
achievements in spite of the obstacles/barriers that they face
· Contextualize
their self-identity socially, culturally, historically, and politically by
giving the young men a sense of self and value of self
