Principal’s Message

US News and World Report recently released its special and annual edition that ranks the nation’s high schools.  The ranking system is based upon participation and success in Advanced Placement courses, graduation rate, and demographic variables.  I am pleased to report that RAHS is ranked as the 5th best school in WA State, and 198th nationally.  Raisbeck Aviation High School also achieved a Gold Level rating, one of only eight schools in WA State to earn that distinction!  The students and staff should be very proud of their hard work and dedication—a fifth-place showing is the highest rank earned by RAHS!

In the wake of the US News and World Report Best High School’s edition, I am making a straightforward appeal to all juniors to take the Smarter Balanced Assessments, SBA.  The SBAs replace the previous generation of state exams known as the HSPE, and like the HSPE, the SBA results are reported as a statewide, school-performance measure.  The students at Raisbeck Aviation High School enjoy a stellar track record of academic excellence as measured on all state-level exams—proudly, the green banners hung across the commons symbolize our success.  Along with our staff, I prefer to keep our stellar accomplishments hovering in an equally high orbit.  If a student chooses to opt out of the SBA exam, they receive a zero, and the school gets dinged.  Every zero is averaged into our composite score and is factored into RAHS’s Annual Yearly Progress data.  Admittedly, this year’s juniors have met the state’s graduation requirement through the HSPE, but should consider the impact on our community: every self-inflicted zero misrepresents our academic profile and student culture.

If you plan to apply to a college located in WA, there is one other reason to take the SBA exams. All 49 public institutions: six colleges and universities, 34 community and technical colleges, and nine independent colleges and universities use the results from the SBAs as part of their decisions on college readiness.  For more information on which colleges outside of WA State rely on the SBA test results, visit—http://www.smarterbalanced.org/higher-education/.

I am asking all students in the Class of 2016 to come with their Raisbeckian mindset and to do their best next Wednesday and Thursday.  Your cooperation and commitment to excellence are deeply appreciated and valued.  Thank you.

To close this week’s main message, I am honored to recognize 14 scholars who participated in one of RAHS’s proudest traditions, The Senior Showcase. Last Thursday, the following students shared their passion and learning to the general public at The Museum of Flight. Please join me in congratulating them their exemplary projects.  All the students automatically earn a PTSA scholarship award, and will be recognized at the Senior Awards Reception on June 8th.  Kudos to the following students— the title of their Senior Project is noted:

Jordan Drugge—Biodiesel Synthesis, David Dupre—Solar System Simulator, Austin Fisher—Photography Website/Portfolio, Ethan Hunt—AP Calculus Study Guide, Jessica Mannard—Lightning and Carbon Fiber, Nikki Macias—Solar System, Owen Mattson, Build it Yourself, Kieran O’Donnell—Biospheres, Gabby Rivera—Heart Model, Erin Ronald—Character Strong, Brandon Shaw—Microwave Spot Welder, Michael Torrey—RI Research and Rescue, Madeline Warnes—Fostering Orphaned Bewick’s Wrens, and Jaclyn Wing—Drive a Robot.

The Principal’s Round of Applause—acknowledging those who make RAHS a better place.

Jaclyn Wing, Edson and Lauren Smith, Connor Barlow, and Maya Warnes - Chaperoned by Jim Smith) traveled to San Francisco to participate in the 10th Annual Maker Faire event.  Jaclyn was accepted as a participant in the Maker Faire to display and present her senior project "Making Robots". The "Maker Faire Editor’s Choice Ribbons" to the Makers that have demonstrated great creativity, ingenuity and innovation for their Maker Faire project. She was awarded the Maker Faire Editor’s Choice Ribbon for her project.  Her project will be utilized for Skunk Works outreach events in the future.

Olivia Shiffer and Owen Mattson—for being selected as the Rotary students of the month.

Mr. Shiroma—for organizing the Senior Showcase at the Museum of Flight.

Marilyn Brockman and Caroline Lemay—Bassetti Architects, moved toward a national level-honor given for excellence in planning process and design response.  The design of RAHS’s building is one of four finalists that will be presented at the national conference in October in San Diego.

Honored to serve as your Principal—Bruce Kelly
