Principal’s Message


After a challenging week, the timing was perfect to enjoy the long-awaited Prom held on Friday evening.  Along with the rest of the staff, I enjoy seeing our students celebrate and enjoy the evening all dressed up to dance the night away!  Special thanks are due to Mr. Shiroma and our junior class for planning this year’s prom, and for all their innovative thinking about how to decorate the space.  Congratulations to Prom Prince and Princess, Johnston Means and Geneva Rossman, and Prom King and Queen, Navath Nhan and Gabby Rivera.  A giant thank you is owed to our staff chaperones for volunteering their time—Ms. Dyer, Ms. Erdmann, Mr. & Mrs. Hiranaka, Ms. Jones-Gunn, Dr. & Mrs. Katims, Mr. Kelly, Ms. Lee, Ms. McEwen, Mr. McComb, Mr. Peterson, Mr. Shiroma, Ms. Weeks, and Ms. Wombold. Thank you!

A final note of congratulations is in order for our newly elected class officers for 2015-2016. Sophomores— Catie Stukel, Toshi Take; Juniors—Josh Buenbrazo, Uyen Tran, and Seniors—Zahnae Aquino and Senay Emmanuel.  Remember to thank each of them for stepping up to serve and represent the students of RAHS.  I salute all of students who campaigned for office, and were willing to commit themselves to make RAHS a better place. Your leadership is inspiring!

Next week, the change to the school calendar means RAHS is in session, Tuesday through Friday.  Monday May 25 is a day off from school in celebration of Memorial Day, a holiday designated to remember the men and women who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces.  I trust you will find time to pay tribute to our many servicemen and women who lost their lives while

NEW ANNOUNCEMENTS

Seniors! The end of the year approaches! One of RAHS’ traditions is the Senior Rose Ceremony. The ceremony is an opportunity for you to thank members of the RAHS community for their support over these last few years. No doubt you’ve faced some stressful or challenging times and turned to someone for support, for help, or a laugh. Buy them a rose and write a short note to show them your gratitude. Roses are $1.25 each and can be ordered before school and during lunch in Mr. Joshi’s room. Act soon, the deadline for orders is Monday May 18th!

Seniors, your first five graduation tickets will be released to you on Monday, May 18th. Remember all fines must be paid off with the bookkeeper before you pick up your tickets. Information about additional ticket requests will be released after the initial graduation ticket distribution.

Shine Bright, a local community organization that works to motivate third through fifth grade students through a weekly after school club, is looking for volunteers! If you are interested in becoming engaged in your community, Shine Bright is a fabulous opportunity to not only make positive change, but to directly see your impact through working one on one with elementary students. Volunteer commitments vary depending on your availability. Shine Bright will host a meeting on May 18th in the PLC directly after school. Come see the Raisbeck Aviation High School freshmen as they perform monologues as such pioneers, heroes, and pathfinders as Charles and Anne Lindbergh, Chuck Yeager, Sally Ride, Anousheh Ansari, Antoine de Saint-Exupery, Amelia Earhart, Capt. Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger, Mike Mullane, Beryl Markham, Richard Bach, Norah O’Neill, and many others.

Culture Club Finale Potluck. June 6, 2015. Noon to 3PM 

Culture Club will be hosting one last gathering to mark the end of our decade together. This will be our last official event. Will you join us?


We're going to go back to our roots for this one! And that means its potluck time! Please bring in a dish to share family style. Don't forget your serving spoons!

Culture Club will provide beverages, plates, cups, and the like for the meal. We hope you will join us for a few hours of nostalgia, laughter, and storytelling together.

Calling all prospective astronauts and aeronautical engineers!
 
Have you ever heard about or played the game Kerbal Space Program? KSP is a fun, exciting rocketry simulator that puts you in control of everything from designing and building a rocket, recruiting crew members, and piloting your spacecraft. In a safe virtual environment, you are free to build and test any contraption imaginable.
 
In conjunction with outside Kerbal mentors, we are excited to host two two-hour after-school KSP sessions: the first will take place on Wed, 13 May; the second will be on Thurs, 21 May.  We will meet in Mr. McComb’ s room.  Whether you are completely new to the game, or have played it for hours on end, there are challenges (and prizes!) awaiting every skill level?

INTERNSHIPS

OLDE THYME AVIATION -- Olde Thyme Aviation operates scenic airplane flights in authentic restored original antique airplanes at Boeing Field adjacent to the Museum of Flight. They have operated flights since 1996 in planes that have histories from 1927 through 1945. Since 1996, they have flown over 10,000 rides for nearly 25,000 passengers. Two RAHS students will provide assistance in explaining and facilitating flight packages to individuals/groups that are interested in going on these biplane rides during the summer months of June/July/August.  Paid position, must be 16 years of age, strong communications and marketing skills.  Submit your letter of interest, resume and transcript to Steve Davolt in the RAHS Career Center by Tuesday, May 19th.

 

FAUNTLEROY CHILDREN’S CENTER – Six interns and one-lead intern will be selected to develop STEM lesson plans, involving hands-on experiments and basic STEM concepts, creating a supply list and budget, and teaching two groups of students ages K-1 and 2-5 grades.  Example lesson themes include: astronomy (mobiles), egg drop (engineering concepts), building bridges (engineering concepts), airplanes (propulsion) and water experiments (density).  Sessions will be held at the Fauntleroy Children’s Center in West Seattle on four Monday afternoons from 12:30-3:30pm.  Proposed schedule is July 7,14,21 and 28. Interns should be able to make three of the four sessions plus several planning meetings and be available by phone/email for further communication.  Submit your cover letter, resume, transcript and name of one RAHS teacher who could serve as a reference.  All materials need to be submitted by Friday, May 22 to Steve Davolt in the CAREER CENTER.

THE MUSEUM OF FLIGHT – MUSEUM INTERPRETER – Interact with visitors and guests providing customer service and knowledge about museum educational programs. Paid position, understanding of basic audio-visual equipment, and knowledge of aviation, astronomy, robotics and/or aerospace science or history.  Apply on-line @ www.museumofflight.org.

CONGRATULATIONS 2015 HOBART MACHINED PRODUCTS INTERNS --  Hailey Johnston and Patrick Galt have been selected as Hobart interns for summer 2015. Congratulations!

SEAFAIR, RAISBECK ENGINEERING, PLANETARY RESOURCES and CAMP INTERVENTION will all be conducting student interviews this week for summer 2015 positions.  Good luck to all students involved!
                                       

PE CREDIT – The Outdoor Learning Center is offering a summer session of their Outdoor Recreation, Health and Fitness Camp this summer.  June 22-26, 2015.  The camp runs from June 22 – 26, 2015.  The intensive curriculum of the Outdoor Recreation, Health and Fitness Camp is designed for students interested in exploring the vast opportunities the outdoors has to offer.  Participants will gain confidence and skills in pursuit of outdoor adventure.  They will respectfully and safely learn how to experience the outdoors with minimal impact on the environment through experiential learning. The cost is $300 and there needs to be a minimum of 12 students.  You will be awarded 0.5 credits for PE and will receive a letter grade when you successfully complete this class.  The credit is sent directly to RAHS via a transcript and you do not have to fill out the “purple” PE form for this.  For more information and the registration forms, go to http://www.awsp.org/resources/learningcenters/SummerCreditClasses

Congratulations to Team Turbulence for their 4th place finish in the top half, of the B League.  Turbulence began the year in the C League, and overall this year has been a success!  Unfortunately, they lost the last two games of the playoffs and of the season against West Seattle.

It it time to thank our seniors--Carlos, Vincent, Liam, David, Erik, and Nikki--for four amazing years. Their leadership has made all the difference, and you will all be missed! Good work this season everyone. Go Turbulence!"

ASB Character Dare: Forgiveness

Write a thank you note to your least favorite teacher and personally deliver it to them.          

A big thank you is in order to all the lovely lads and ladies who made last Fridays Waltzing in Wonderland a huge success! From the decorations to the desserts and the DJ, it was a magical night indeed. Upperclassmen be sure to thank your PROM committee, teacher chaperons, as well as all the volunteer underclassmen for such a great night!

Congratulations to all of the brave students who ran for class captain last week! ASB is glad to be welcoming Catie Stukel, Toshi Take, Josh Buenbrazo, Uyen Tran, Zahnae Aquino and Senay Emmanuel to the team for the 2015-2016 year. We know you will represent your classes well!

Speaking of next year’s ASB positions, there's still a few jobs available that DON'T require a speech! Visit Mrs. Fitz and pick up an application for Prom Committee (sophomores), Operations and Events Coordinator, as well as Art Director. These applications are due WEDNESDAY MAY 20TH so get crackin!

On top of all this campaigning, ASB is starting a project to create a mural on the parking-lot side wall of our spirit shack! We are looking for artistic individuals to create a design focused on our mascot and school spirit. Submissions are due to Mrs. Fitz no later than FRIDAY, and can be drawn, painted or of course done in CAD. Get creative!

As always come see what your ASB is up to in Mrs. Fitz's room at lunch on Wednesdays to see what cool stuff we're planning, and to give us your input!

The LAST BYU test for this school year will be given on Wednesday, May 27 at 3:45, so finish up your classes and order those tests!  If you aren't finished by then, you will need to take the test with a different proctor or next September.  Remember, you must order the test from BYU at least two weeks in advance.

 

Students enrolled in Algebra 1, Geometry, and Biology will be taking the End-of-Course Assessments this spring:

Cambridge Immerse is a two-week residential educational experience that allows participants to gain an unrivalled insight into a chosen discipline, ranging from the arts to the sciences. Subjects offered include Medicine, Law, Economics, History and Engineering and many more. Tutorials and seminars are taught by highly regarded tutors from Oxford and Cambridge University in an optimal learning environment that stimulates academic enquiry; yet the carefully planned schedule ensures that the program not only meets the academic needs of the participants, but also provides a unique insight into the university city through an abundance of activities.

Reflections – PTSA’s 2015 Art Celebration

2015 Theme: Let Your Imagination Fly.  Any student is invited to create an original work of art that reflects this theme for the annual art festival that starts at RAHS and ends in a select show at the US Department of Education.  Recognition and cash prizes for entries in any of 6 different categories:  Photography, Visual Arts, Literature, Music composition, Choreography, and Film short.  Art accepted now until about Dec.

Parents, students must not stay at school after 6 PM unless they are directly supervised and participating in a school event/club or extracurricular activity.  This is to ensure student safety and adult supervision while on the school campus. If you are unable to pick your child up before 6 PM on a regular school day, please arrange a carpool (connect with the PTSA) or make other arrangements for transportation.  For liability reasons, your child must be supervised or find a way home by 6PM.  Thank you!
