Principal’s Message
Welcome back from an extended weekend break that was
in honor of our military veterans. Last
week’s Veteran’s Day assembly was both informative and moving as our own
teacher and Air Force veteran, Mr. Sarver, shared his experience of
serving our country. Other veterans in
attendance responded to questions, each conveying how proud they were to serve
in spite of the many challenges encountered while on active duty. Thank you, Mr. Sarver, and to all veterans
everywhere! And, thank you to the ASB
for planning and facilitating the assembly, including the posting of the
flags by Jessi Mau and Victoria Beach. Remarkable!
I hope you also caught up a bit on your rest these
past few days. I realize that everyone has been working full-out since school
started on September 9, and unlike other schools, we have had no breaks. Your
energy is amazing, but time for rest and rejuvenation is important in order to
sustain a busy life. I truly hope you
did something over these past few days that was just for fun and that you
remembered to turn off your alarm clocks. I certainly did so!
Selections for the Rolls-Royce Spirit of
Excellence Award were made last Friday.
Congratulations to Teal Dowd and Camila Palacio who were
selected from an applicant pool of 11 very well qualified seniors who plan a
future in some field of engineering.
Teal and Camila will be honored at the Joe Sutter Dinner, sponsored by
the Royal Aeronautical Society, this Saturday evening. Their names will be engraved on the fan blade
of a Trent 1000 engine that is displayed in our lobby, and each will receive
$5,000 to pursue university studies in engineering. We are grateful to Rolls-Royce for their
investment in our students each year and very proud of Teal and Camila. (Note to students not selected: Don’t
despair! Your essays were excellent. There will be more scholarships available
this spring, including the Joe Sutter Incredibles Award, the Dan Hartley
Memorial Award, Aerojet, and the new James Raisbeck Legacy Award. All are for
engineering-bound students.)
In closing my message for this week, I thank
EVERYONE who participated in last Thursday’s Information Program for 8th
Graders & Parents. While we anticipated a large crowd, I think all of
us were surprised that close to 600 were in attendance. They just kept coming, and many stayed until
the very end of the Q&A session and longer! In my interactions with
families, all were consistently complimentary of students, staff, parents, and
mentors who showed such obvious passion for being part of our community. You rock, RAHS community! Next and final Info Program for Class of 2018
will be December 5.
Wishing you an insightful week of learning, and
honored to be your principal—
Reba G.
NEW
ANNOUNCEMENTS
The Museum of Flight won the Best Museum of Western Washington and
four RAHS students, Austin Fisher, Abby
Jarve, Andrew Denny, and Khoa Nguyen, were chosen to be representatives for
the museum. King 5's Meeghan Black with Evening Magazine came to the Museum of
Flight to present the award to the student volunteers.
Science Olympians—last Saturday, our Olympians
had a bonus day at school. Students specializing in the study of space,
physical, earth, and life sciences honed their understanding and skills;
students specializing in engineering honed the devices that they will bring to
competitions. Among other things: students launched and tweaked and
re-launched gliders; they tested and analyzed failure modes in balsa-wood
cantilevers; they demonstrated their knowledge of anatomy and physiology,
epidemiology, and genetics; they distinguished between powders using
qualitative analysis techniques; etc. The day was a useful opportunity
for teamwork and for our students to continue their trajectory of high-powered
learning. We appreciate and salute their dedication. We are also grateful
for the parents and guardians who helped feed our brains and bodies by
providing mentoring and healthy snacks.
Student-Led
Conferences:
On
Monday 11/25 and Tuesday 11/26 we will be holding student-led conferences from
3:40 – 6:10 p.m. During the
conference, your child will outline his/her academic goals, explain what s/he
is learning in his/her classes, and support his/her explanations with evidence
chosen from his/her body of work.
Student-led conferences will last approximately 20-25 minutes. Please return your time preference form no
later than Wednesday, November 13.
Watch
a United-sponsored documentary on women pilots of WWII
In
honor of our veterans and the upcoming U.S. Veterans Day holiday, a documentary
about the little-known women pilots who served in World War II has been created.
Tune in to a U.S. public television station in your area beginning Nov. 8 to
watch “We Served, Too,” the story of a group of young, determined and
courageous women pilots who broke barriers and shattered stereotypes. The documentary will air in 10 major markets
in the U.S. beginning this week and will run on more than 200 PBS stations
throughout 2014 during key holidays and history months, including Women’s History
Month, Veterans Day, Labor Day, Memorial Day and Independence Day. Visit this
story on the News tab for a listing of markets and air times and click here to watch the film’s trailer.
Watch
your step on the steps!
To avoid injury, please slow down, use the hand
rails, and watch your step at all times!
Remember stay to the right on the stairs.
Check
in BEFORE going to the nurse’s office:
Students who need to visit the nurse’s office need
to please check in with an office staff person first so that we know you are
there. On Thursday’s you may check in
with the nurse directly if she is in her office. Also, students must check in with the nurse’s
office BEFORE calling your parent to say that you are sick and need to go
home.
From your ASB:
Thank you to Mr.
Sarver and all the veterans from the
Museum of Flight who came to the assembly last Thursday! Your stories and
advice were great, and we would like to express another thank-you for the
service you provide for our nation.

the Quarter assembly. This is a great opportunity for students to be
recognized for their CLASS (Character, Leadership, Attitude, Scholarship, and

honored in the next one!
This Friday, the Spirit Shack will be
open in cafeteria. We have new Seattle stride socks and v-necks! All white
t-shirts will be $5 for ASB Card Holders, so please make sure to show your

Quote of the Week & aviation history
When responding to the Navy’s claim
that sea travel is safer than air travel, non-Navy pilots have long said: “So
far, everything we’ve sent up has come down, but not everything sent down has
come back up.”
On
16 November 1927, the United States Navy commissions the USS Saratoga (CV-3), its first large aircraft carrier capable of fleet speeds and true combat operations.
