Principal’s Message

AP testing is over for this year! Celebrate, Scholars, while you await the news of your scores!

EOC testing in Geometry occurs this week along with senior project presentations, making it another busy week for many.  Seniors, I look forward to seeing the results of your hard work as you present your projects and share your new learnings.

We are hosting a visit today for education leaders from the state of Ohio who are interested in knowing more about our model for teaching and learning.  The State of Ohio has been a leader in STEM education so we also look forward to learning from them.  We will be touring some classes and may ask some of you to meet with them to answer questions and share your thoughts about how attending our school has influenced your plans for college and career.

While I have been off campus way too much over the past two weeks dealing with a medical challenge (I’m on the mend now!), I was so grateful that I was here last Tuesday to hear the speeches for ASB offices.  It was obvious that thoughtful preparation preceded delivery of the speeches, and the candidates all took pride in AHS and serving as a school ambassador.  Congratulations to ALL the candidates who sought an office!  If you were not elected, I encourage you to still get involved in student government and let your voice be heard.  Sincere congratulations to the following leaders who will be filling some very big shoes of our outgoing ASB officers:

·         Royce Le, ASB President

·         Jonah Graves, Vice President

·         Gabrielle (Gabby) Rivera, Secretary

·         Phillip Lui, Treasurer

Royce, Jonah, Gabby and Phillip—I look forward to working with you as we transition to our new school and experience the newness of a fresh learning environment, complete with all the opportunities and challenges that are sure to accompany our move.  Mr. Kelly and I, along with the entire student body, will be counting on your leadership!  Congratulations to all of you!

There’s more good news to announce this week!  To start with…

·         Each year, our sophomores take the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).  I am very pleased to announce that the following students met the requirements to enter the 2014 National Merit Scholarship Program:  Shyam Ajudia, Lewis Brancati, Hudson Hohimer, and Dalton Huey!  These high performers have shown outstanding academic potential and are recognized as being among the 50,000 highest-scoring participants of some 1.5 million program entrants.  Super congratulations to these AHS scholars! We are proud of you!

And, congratulations to:

·         Matthew Balbuena and Lona Medhane who have been offered a summer internship with the Environmental Science Center where they will be working on research projects and learning about scientific studies of our environment. Kudos, Matthew and Lona!

·         Royce Le, who is reaping the benefits of all his hard work, the latest being his acceptance into Microsoft Boot Camp! Way to go, Royce!

·         Emilio Anselmo, who has been offered a paid aviation marketing internship at Dynon Avionics in Woodinville.  FANTASTIC!

·         Katie Burrell, Zahnae Aquino, Kevin Zhang, Bryant Nguyen, Zacc Harmon, Senay Emmanuel and Alec Burke who traveled to Washington State University in Pullman, WA this past Saturday to participate in the 2013 Imagine Tomorrow Sixth Annual Problem Solving Competition for Grades 9-12.  All are freshman students in Mr. McComb’s Physical Science & Physics of Flight class, and they were well prepared for the competition.  Katie, Zahnae, Kevin, Bryant and Zacc presented their project, “Carbonated Plants” to 20 judges and advisors. Senay and Alec presented their project “Utilitrack” earning Best Project from a Newly Participating School in Congressional District 9. Senay and Alec won $100 each and $500 for AHS. The students were accompanied in Pullman by Chaperone/Advisors Tina Huynh and Steve Burke.  Mr. Burke reported, “All of the AHS students took this competition very seriously and worked really hard. Besides preparing a project and presentation to compete in the 134 team field, repeating the presentation 20 times in the five hour presentation period took serious focus.”  Hearty congratulations to all participants and bundles of gratitude to our wonderful parent chaperones!  FYI to all: This is the very first time that AHS students have participated in the Imagine Tomorrow Competition.  I suspect it took a WSU alum to make it happen? If so, more thanks to Mr. Burke!

·         Our amazing Junior Class for sponsoring this year’s Prom last Friday evening!  By all reports, a good time was had by all!

We just learned last week that school will NOT start before Labor Day this year as it has for the past two years.  The agreed upon date for start of school is Wednesday, September 4, 2013.  Please mark your calendars and plan accordingly.  At this time we are still planning to hold registration on Wednesday, August 21 at our current site.  If plans change, we will send a timely notification and post on our website.  Thank you, Everyone, in advance for being flexible over the summer months!

Next week will be a short week of learning, Wednesday through Friday.  Monday May 27 and Tuesday May 28 are days off from school in celebration of Memorial Day, a holiday designated to remembering the men and women who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces.  I hope you will find time to pay tribute to our many servicemen and women who lost their lives while defending our country.

Enjoy your holiday break, and we’ll see you next Wednesday.  May you all have a most inspiring week of learning!  I am honored to be your principal.

                                                                                                                                    ~Reba G.

Can you help to Sponsor A Senior?
Fundraiser for the Class of 2013 Graduation Party
As June approaches, our seniors look toward the end of their high school years at AHS. Capping off a busy day, the Seniors will gather one last time to celebrate four years well done as a class at their Grad Party...the final gathering until they meet again in 2023 for their ten year reunion! Held once again at iFly, this celebration is a safe way for our seniors to cut loose after what is bound to be an emotional day, and has become a welcome tradition at Aviation High School.
But, it sure is an expensive tradition! At a cost of approximately $200 a student, we look for ways to defray the ticket cost for each to attend. We are also paying for several scholarships. We want to make sure every student who wants to attend is able to. Can you help? The Grad Party Committee is asking for donations of any denomination to help "SPONSOR A SENIOR". Whether it be $25 or $250, any amount adds up, and is greatly appreciated. We have several students on scholarship, and are selling tickets for $125 to make it more affordable to attend. So...whatever your student's grade, from freshman to senior, think about making a donation! All checks should be made payable to "AHS PTSA" with "Grad Party" in the memo line. Questions, comments, concerns? Contact Mindy McClean at
mindymacster@hotmail.com or 206.679.8692.

  1. I’m in my final year of law school and wish to take the Bar Exam as soon as possible. Would like to prepare for this test using the best course because I am considering the difficulty of this test and know that proper guidance would be mandatory. Could you please provide the recommendations for the best course?
