The Principal’s Message
Happiness.  I relish a favorite definition for this word.  John F. Kennedy, our 35th U.S. President, repeatedly shared it at White House press briefings.  He traced the definition’s origin back to the ancient Greeks, and for the Greeks, happiness meant utilizing your powers along lines of excellence.  Since our opening day, and every day since then, I’ve spotted happiness modeled by the students and staff inside and outside RAHS classrooms.  I commend the entire RAHS community for beginning the school year along lines of excellence.  You inspire me!

The spirit of excellence bubbling at RAHS aligns with the motto of one of our wonderful industry partners, Rolls Royce.  As an industry leader, Rolls Royce sponsors The Spirit of Excellence Award, a unique scholarship, named after their passion for excellence.  The term, excellence, is epitomized in Henry Royce’s famous phrase: “Strive for perfection in everything. Take the best that exists and make it better.  If it doesn't exist, create it. Accept nothing nearly right or good enough.”

Last year, Senior Vice President, Seattle Operations Rolls-Royce - Boeing Team, Paul Belshaw, and his staff, explored a novel way to promote The Spirit of Excellence Award to all RAHS students.  Given that our Student of the Quarter assemblies' honor excellence in academics, it was suggested to recognize the scholarship winners during our first Student of the Quarter assembly.  I received great news last week. The Rolls Royce staff will return to RAHS on November 18th to honor two more deserving seniors!
Since the 2011-2012 school year, the Spirit of Excellence Award is presented to two seniors who plan to pursue an education and career pathway in engineering.  Each finalist will receive $5,000 to spend toward earning an engineering degree.
The scholarship application is now available on our website.  Go to the RAHS home page, click on the Students Tab, and scroll down the left-hand navigation pane to find the link for Rolls Royce Award.

The deadline for submitting the application for the Spirit of Excellence Award is Friday, October 30, 2015 by 4:00PM.

I am delighted to report on one more scholarship development.  Last Wednesday, our esteemed industry partner, PNBAA, Pacific Northwest Business Aviation Association, sponsored their annual, five-star, charity golf event.  The proceeds from the golf tournament directly supports RAHS and Civil Air Patrol scholarships.  RAHS seniors, Bailey Fuentes and Noah Voges, distinguished themselves as superb ambassadors, and networked with aviation business leaders, and wowed them through their impressive play at the Newcastle Golf Club.

Please join me in thanking the Directors and Officers of PNBAA, Lance Robertson, Allan Burnett, Jim Bennett, Kristi Ivey, David Warner, Darwin Stout, Jeff Stillwell, Wayne Werner, Don Bonta, Ryan Setting, Scott Jefvert, Cindy Hales and Jeffrey Roberts, for championing the premier golf event along lines of excellence.  PNBAA will announce the details of the scholarship at their annual meeting in November at the Museum of Flight.
With the backdrop of fantastic support from our industry partners, and your impressive effort shown at the start to the school year, I look forward to another extraordinary week of happiness.
