Principal’s Message

Welcome back from your mid-winter break! Whatever you may have done, I trust it included being outside to enjoy our spring-like weather.

Our Skunkworks Robotics team spent most of their vacation completing their robot and celebrating with an Ice Cream Social on Monday evening.  The robot is now “bagged” for competition, although work will continue on the practice robot to ensure that the team is as well prepared as possible for their regional competitions. Good luck, Skunks!

Thanks to our amazing partner, Alaska Airlines, our seniors and ACE Club members will have an opportunity to fly on a brand new Boeing 737 airplane that Alaska will take receipt of in April or June.  We are delighted that Alaska has again selected our school for a delivery flight!  Details are now being coordinated with Alaska and Boeing, including how each passenger will be security checked, departure time from RAHS and arrival back to school, etc. These details will be explained in a letter from me that will be on the reverse side of a field trip permission form that you will soon receive. Stay tuned!

We are reminded daily that the flu season is still with us. Ms. Hiranaka noted that many students return to school for one day—they are not fully recovered, and then stay home for two more days.  Our teachers will work with you for an excused absence.  Please remember that your health must be your top priority.

The Principal’s Round of Applause

Student of the Quarter Award Recipients: Freshmen: Izzie Torres, Timothy Wang, Sophomores: Rohan Mathew, Lorena Wilson-Villegas, Juniors: Kory Watson, Geneva Rossman, and Seniors: Lori Baca, Joseph Vu—congratulations on your recognition and awards!

Catie Stukel, Bao Truong, Johnston Means, Henry Leaming— for being nominated for Student of the Quarter, congratulations!

Zahnae Aquino, Ashley Balbuena, Miles Bush, Austin Coleman, Nicole Do, Austin Fischer, Jordan Fletcher, Jonah Graves, Brynne Hunt, Sharan Kaur, Jackie Madsen, Jessi Mau, Bryant Nguyen, Navath Nhan, Karl Nielson, Gabby Rivera, Erin Ronald, Makoto Take, Matt Vredevoogd, and Sean Wong—for planning and leading the student of the quarter assembly.

Gabby and Navath—for their state of the school address and challenge, “What’s Your Spark?”

Dana Sones, Robin Raymond, Mary Zoppi, and Emma Waddill—our PTSA volunteers who provided the delicious Valentine’s Day lunch for staff.

Honored to serve as your Principal—Bruce Kelly

Robotics

Dear Families and Students,

Thank you to those of you who have indicated that you would be available to help at the Ice Cream Social! Let me know your availability by sending me an email (see below for address). Jobs include serving ice cream, set up, and lots of help for clean up! We will need baked goods (i.e. brownies, cookies, - all individual items to grab and go) the night of the social. We plan on serving about 300 people. This is the same as last year as we are again excited to include all of the other Highline School District FRC teams to this event.

Guests will arrive at 6:00 p.m. to enjoy the ice cream sundaes. The event is held at the Glacier campus—the site of our practice field.  Students will arrive at 2:00 p.m. to help set up. Ice cream will be served from 6 p.m.-7 p.m. At approximately 7:00 p.m., we need to move tables off of the practice field. The goal is to have these moved and ready to go for a 7:15 p.m. program start.

This venue is a bit challenging for an event of this type. However, with lots of volunteers, we will be able to quickly transition from the food service to the main event, the robots!

Thank you for your help and support of our Skunks. If you have questions or are able to volunteer, please email me at shawnwill2002@msn.com. See you on Monday afternoon the Glacier Practice Field.

Quote of the Week contributed by senior, Navath Nhan, and in honor of Black History Month.

"A good leader can engage in a debate frankly and thoroughly, knowing that at the end he and the other side must be closer, and thus emerge stronger. You don't have that idea when you are arrogant, superficial, and uninformed."
