Let’s hear three cheers for RAHS! Last
week, U.S. News and World Report released
its education issue to rank more than 19,400 public high
schools across the nation. Based upon key
metrics tied to student performance on state assessments and participation and
success in Advanced Placement courses, high schools can earn a gold, silver or
bronze award. For the second consecutive year, RAHS
was ranked as the 7th best high school in WA State, and earned a gold
award. Please join me in
congratulating our talented and amazing teachers and support staff. I think you would also agree that the daily
commitment shown by our students, unrivaled support from parents, and the
generous involvement of our industry and community factored into our success. Thank
you for making RAHS a wonderful and distinguished place to learn.
Coincidentally, this year, the
great news about RAHS seemed to travel further around the globe. By last Friday, the
deadline for the class of 2019 applications, Ms. Hiranaka and Ms. McEwen received more than 315 applications from the United Kingdom, Australia,
Hawaii, Alaska, Oregon, and 30 neighboring school districts. We also enjoyed flattering
recognition in the Canadian aviation magazine, Airline Passenger Experience, APEX.
On January 19th, APEX published a superb article about RAHS’s
instructional focus, sports-of-the-mind teams, and college and career readiness
program. Howard Slutsken, a reporter for APEX, spent two days interviewing our students
and staff, and his article and photos are linked to our homepage.
Seniors, there is a new
scholarship available from the Society
of Chinese American Aerospace Engineers, SCAAE. The scholarship information
is found under the Students Tab on our website. Navigate your way to the 2015 SCAAE Scholarship Criteria to
determine if the award—in honor of the Asian Aerospace Pioneers, applies to you.
The essay and resume are
due on or before Monday, March 2nd by 4:00PM. Please provide
Mr. Kelly with a hard copy of the essay and resume. The scholarship winners will be announced
during the Student of the Quarter Assembly in April.
While I am on the topic
of scholarships, last Friday, Dr. Raisbeck paid a visit and expressed his
desire to increase the Raisbeck Legacy Scholarship. In 2014, Dr. and Mrs.
Raisbeck provided one $40,000 scholarship to a student pursuing an engineering
major. This year, their foundation will
offer three legacy scholarships. Each scholarship has the same valuation as
last year, or $40,000 each. With their
generosity, and SCAAE’s new scholarship, our seniors are eligible for over
$175,000 in awards. For students within the
class of 2015, I trust this investment can be a life-changing event for your
final semester at RAHS and beyond.
Finally, our Saturday evening
TOLO was well attended—163 students danced the night way. Thank you to our chaperones, Ms.
Fitzpatrick, Ms. Nurzhanov, Ms. Hiranaka, Ms. McEwen, Ms. Juarez, and Mr.
Germanis. Your support allowed our students to enjoy themselves and take a
break from studying. Special
thanks to Josh Sherbrooke and Adam Chase for being awesome DJ's!
The
Principal’s Round of Applause
Ms. Jones Gunn—for
completing her first FTC Robotics
Team Season as Coach and finishing well with a great end-of-season party.
Mr. Joshi and Ms.
Wombold, —for volunteering their time to
assist with the APEX article.
Anab Abdullahi—for
providing the meal for our delicious, staff appreciation lunch.
Curtis Eng and Susan Huntington—for feeding our hungry Skunks
Hawaiian style!
Ms. Hiranaka and Ms. McEwen—for managing the crush of prospective
student applicants all last week until 4:15PM on Friday. Wow!
Amelia McCahill—for playing the Star Spangled Banner on her trumpet
at the Spirit Assembly.
ASB students—for the great assembly kick off to Spirit Week.
Honored to serve as your Principal—Bruce Kelly

Quote of the Week— contributed by sophomore, Maren Gibson
It is entirely impossible for man to rise into the air and float
there. For this you would need wings of tremendous dimensions and they would
have to be moved at three feet per second. Only a fool would expect such a
thing to be realized.
