Principal’s Message

Each year, the American Association of University Women (AAUW) recognizes three outstanding Junior female students in the areas of science, mathematics, and technology. These young women will be given recognition at AAUW’s state convention and be honored by AAUW Highline Branch at a reception on May 7, 2014. AAUW promotes equity in education for women and girls through scholarships and grants. The national foundation gave over $3 million to women in scholarships and fellowships last year alone. The association’s goal with the High School Scholar Program is to encourage more young girls and women to become interested in careers in science, mathematics and technology, where they are still underrepresented in the workforce.

We are pleased to announce that Raisbeck Aviation High School’s junior women who will receive this year’s awards are:

·         Gabby Rivera—Science

·         Jordan Drugge—Math

·         Kirsten Noble—Technology

Congratulations to our outstanding junior women who will most definitely make significant contributions in the STEM workforce!

And…we have two more RAHS students who have earned the rank of Eagle Scout through the Boy Scouts of America! On average, only four out of 100 boys make the rank of Eagle.  Sincere congratulations to Giovanni Hittman and Ford Stratton on this extraordinary accomplishment!

March Rotary students of the Month are Jonathan Stariha and Maddie Wilson. If you know these two remarkable seniors, you know that both represent the traits of a Rotarian, most important being that of service to others.  Congratulations, Jonathan and Maddie!  Both will be recognized by the Southcenter Rotary at a special luncheon.

Our Speech & Debate team returned from Harvard last week, tired and wiser!  Mr. Shiroma reported that our students performed well in their events, among hundreds of competitors who traveled from various states. They had the opportunity to observe debates and learn from top competitors, which will make them even better prepared for future competitions. Visiting Tier One colleges was also an opportunity of a lifetime for the 16 students who were selected to attend the Harvard tournament.  We are proud of you, Speech & Debaters!

As explained in last week’s edition of the NOTAM, we have an opportunity to take a charter bus to Portland on Saturday, April 12 (during spring break) to cheer for our Skunkworks Robotics team.  A sign-up sheet is available in Mrs. Hiranaka’s office.  If interested in going, please sign up this week so that we have adequate time to reserve the bus, get field trip permissions taken care of, and arrange other details.  Going on this trip depends on our filling the bus to capacity.  Go Skunks!

A big thank you to everyone who helped us interview students last week. You were all exemplary ambassadors who made our eighth graders feel welcomed and special.  The student applicants were in awe of you, and so was I. You are remarkable! Thank you for giving up your evenings and a Saturday to assist with our interviews.  The next sessions are scheduled for Tuesday March 4 and 18 and Saturday March 22.

That’s it for this week, Scholars.  Please read the Announcements section for important information and opportunities.  Enjoy your week of learning!  As always, I am honored to be your principal.

                                                                                                                        ~Reba G.

Quote of the Week & aviation history

Why fly? Simple. I'm not happy unless there's some room between me and the ground.”— Richard Bach

(Just a year ago, Richard Bach finished his book Jonathan Livingston Seagull, originally published in 1970 in three sections.  The fourth, and final, section was inspired by his accident in 2012.)
