Principal’s Message:
Welcome back, Everyone, from your Thanksgiving holiday and extended weekend. I hope you are well rested and ready to actively engage in learning until our next holiday break, which begins on December 19. December 18 will be a full day of school so please plan accordingly.
Thank you, Scholars, for preparing for your Student Led Conference last week. In the conversations I overheard, I was impressed with your ability to articulate your learning with your parents and outline what you need to do to meet on-time graduation requirements. Student led conferences are part of your 13th year and beyond planning process, so I encourage you to now monitor your goals to ensure that you are well prepared for college and eventually, the career of your dreams. I extend a special thanks to all the parents who participated, too, in spite of the downpour of rain and windy weather that graced us last week.
It’s Spirit Week, with each day presenting a different opportunity to show your Phoenix spirit. I look forward to seeing your individual creativity presented each day. Please remember that if you do not choose to participate in spirit day attire you are expected to be in regular school dress, which means no jeans.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
About our Skunks and their Mentors from Parent Coordinator Mr. Smith: Thanks for helping with the Boy Scout Robotics Merit Badge Clinic last Saturday. We helped 99 Boy Scouts earn their Robotics Merit Badge. A special thanks to all the Skunks and mentors who helped lead the clinics, demonstrate the Skunk Robot, teach NXT programming, assist in building the robots, and all the runners who helped the scouts get to their next class. They were all very proud when they got their blue cards signed off at the end of the day. Special thanks to:

We also had five very patient Robotics Merit Badge Counselors: Mr. Steele, Mr. Billand, Mr. Mealy, Mr. Campisteguy, and Mrs. Moss who were busy meeting and signing off at the very end of the day. Thanks to all who made this event a success!
Women of Aviation - You Are an Inventor Contest--Your challenge is to conceive a new padding system or a new type of adjustable space suit that improves freedom of movement for tomorrow’s space explorers. Speak Up 2012 Survey
From now until Friday, December 21, the Speak Up 2012 Survey is open. As a component of the Speak Up National Research Project, the Speak Up survey collects and reports data on STEM-related topics and the use of educational technology.
The survey audience is K-12 students, their families, educators, administrators, and the ed tech staff, like yourself, who support technology-enriched teaching and learning. All Washington schools — public, private, tribal and online— are registered, so that staff and students can complete the 20-minute survey. You’ll find multiple choice and open-ended questions. All information is 100% confidential.

Speech & Debate Update
Speech and Debate has gone to three tournaments this year and the results are as follows:
We sent seven teams to Gig Harbor, five in novice and two in junior. Of the people who went, Zahnae Aquino and Shailee Stevens won speaker awards for going 4-1 for the tournament.
We sent eight teams to Snohomish High School, 4 in novice and 4 in open. Dylan Smith and Katie McConville went 5-1 and received second place in the open division. Our entire novice team was close to awards with Anthony Ayson, Brian Huynh, Joan Aonan, Elizabeth van Flandern, Zahnae Aquino, and Shailee Stevens all ending with 4-2 records, out of the awards by mere speaker points.
Speech and debate recently sent 11 teams in both novice and open division debate to Tacoma for the second state qualifier of the year. Although none of our teams qualified, our school performed well with two teams in the top 10 for each division out of a pool of over 50 competitors.
Association of Computer Professionals in Education (ACPE) Scholarships these scholarships are available to graduation high school seniors who have been actively involved in the use of technology during their high school careers and are planning to pursue studies in a technology related field. Four $2,500 scholarships will be awarded to four deserving students in Washington and Oregon . Application deadline is March 1, 2013. Follow the link below for details and to download an application:

- Make-A-Wish Project: AHS Students and Staff, would you like to help grant wishes for children with life-threatening medical conditions? This year ASB is partnering up with the Make-A-Wish Foundation to raise money in order to grant a wish for one of their participants. ASB will be selling silicon bracelets with the slogan "Dreams Really Do Come True" for $1 during lunch. One-hundred percent of the profit goes towards the expense of sending a child to Disneyland. Your contributions will help give hope, strength and joy to our sponsored Make-A-Wish Kid. EVERYONE CAN HELP! This is a great opportunity for you to serve others and really show that this is the season for giving! - Adopt a Family: AHS Students and Staff!!! Are you ready to help fulfill a family’s needs? This year ASB is adopting a family with 4 kids. With a much bigger family than last year, we will need ALL of your help to make this holiday season an especially memorable one. EACH ONE OF YOU CAN HELP BY PICKING UP ONE OF THE MANY ORNAMENTS ON THE HOLIDAY TREE LOCATED IN THE CAFETERIA. Each ornament will have an item written on it (the item that family needs). After you get the item, please bring it to Ms. Fitzpatrick (Room 22). This is a good opportunity for you to help out the community! DON'T FORGET TO LOOK FOR THE HOLIDAY TREE AND PICK-UP AN ORNAMENT!*Staff-- you can help as well! There will be another tree in the staff lounge. AS A SCHOOL, WE CAN FULFILL THIS FAMILY NEEDS! SO LET’S CONTINUE PICKING UP THOSE ORNAMENTS!
- Aviation is competing with Tyee High School to raise canned food drive from November 28th to December 12th. The collected food will be donated to the Des Moines Food Bank. Students can donate their canned food in designated class boxes. Any nonperishable item works, including items like oatmeal, whole grain pastas, brown rice, tomato products, canned vegetables, canned fish or other meat, beans, and much more. The winning class will receive 100 spirit points at the end of the competition. For more information, contact Hiren Ajudia, Nick Vale, or Anastasia Pallis.
· TOLO: STUDENTS! Are you ready for our second dance? TOLO is THIS Saturday, December 1st from 8:00-11:00 p.m. The theme is "Decades".
Each class will be representing a decade:
Freshmen-Fifties (Grease-inspired) Sophomores-Sixties (Hippie-inspired) Juniors-Seventies (Disco) Seniors-Eighties (Rock and Neon- Write a Letter Day: This is an event where students and staff are encouraged to write letters to those they appreciate, don't know well, or just for fun in order to make someone feel good and put a smile on their face! Remember that it only takes a small step (like writing a letter) that can make an impact on someone's life, and maybe even the world. This event will span over two days (December 17th to December 18th) just in case someone forgets to trade their letters on the first day. · Spirit Shack: Students, $5 Friday is opening again this year at an even closer location this year...YOUR SCHOOL CAFETERIA! ASB will be selling AHS apparel every Friday during lunch. You can purchase AHS apparel, and if you have an ASB card, will receive a 25% discount on all items. You must show ASB members your ID in order to get the discount. Also, we are selling lanyards, water bottle, AHS tube sock, and T-Shirts for $5 Friday!
Previous NOTAM Announcements – but still Relevant
AHS Interact Club is inviting all AHS students to join us for the Jingle Bell Dash 5k Run/Walk on December 9th. The Jingle Bell Dash is a fundraiser for the Arthritis Foundation. The run will occur in downtown Seattle near Westlake Center. More information can be found on the Interact Club's bulletin board.
Stair Climb for Leukemia Students have the opportunity to participate in the Stair Climb for Leukemia, held on the 24th of March, at the Columbia Tower in Seattle. The purpose of the climb is to raise money and awareness for Leukemia and Lymphoma by participating in grueling ascent 75-flights up the Columbia Tower. Thousands participate every year, with the opportunity to meet the firemen whom climb in full firefighting gear. There is an entry fee of around $60; however it comes with free parking, all-you-can-eat at the top, free merchandise and an incredible view of the Seattle area. This year student Aaron Mau wishes to establish a strong team from Aviation High to provide not only donations to the Leukemia and Lymphoma society, but to share a fun and unique experience that everyone can learn from. Imagine Tomorrow More than $100,000 in cash prizes will be awarded this May to schools and students in the sixth annual Imagine Tomorrow competition at Washington State University. Imagine Tomorrow challenges 9th through 12th graders to address global energy concerns with creative, well-researched ideas. It’s free. A phone call is REQUIRED to the school each day of an absence AND a parent signed note is REQUIRED upon the student’s return to school in order for the absence to be excused.
New WA state law for coding student absences: Beginning this academic year, schools are required to mark absences due to family vacation as UNEXCUSED. This is change from previous practice. We ask for your understanding and cooperation and want to remind families that excused absences are permitted for illness, religious reasons, and school-related functions.
