Principal’s Message:

The Sky is definitely NOT the limit, as evidenced by everyone in attendance at the wonderfully successful PTSA-sponsored auction this past Saturday evening! From the start of the Silent Auction at 6:00 p.m. to the close of the live auction at 10:00 p.m., the atmosphere was fun and lively, thanks to a full house of parents and supporters who want the best possible education for AHS students.  Our multi-talented Mr. Scott McComb served as the Master of Ceremonies while the experienced KOMO newscaster Brad Goode put his unique talents to work in getting the audience to repeatedly raise their bid cards. It was a delightful evening for everyone after nearly a year of planning by Auction Chair (and parent of two former AHS students) Teri Katzer and her outstanding crew of parent supporters, all who deserve a gold medal for their superhuman efforts! Gratitude is also extended to key sponsors The Boeing Company, Esterline Defense Company, Aviation Partners, TECT Aerospace, Burien Toyota, AeroTEC Engineering, Brad and Danielle Tilden, Lloyd and Halah Voges, and the amazing Peter and Sarah Anderson (Peter is Chair of the AHS Board of Directors) of Galvin Flying.  And a special thanks to Sam Baker, parent of AHS freshman Hannah Baker, for programming Norman the Robot to introduce another key sponsor, James Raisbeck, whose name will grace our new school. I fell in love with Norman at first sight and am quite sure that he would love being part of our AHS community sometime in the near future. Thank you, too, to students who assisted at the auction and to both students and staff who contributed items. To everyone who contributed to the success of the 2012 auction—THANK YOU! We love and appreciate you!

Congratulations are extended this week to:
  • Dustin Werran and Wendy Zaballos on their selection as November Students of the Month for Southcenter Rotary! We salute you!
  • Jacob Wagner and Hunter McSwain who were selected as Rolls Royce Scholarship recipients from the AHS Class of 2013! Each student now has $5,000 to use toward pursuit of an engineering degree at their post-secondary institution of choice. They will travel to Rolls Royce in Everett, WA this Wednesday for lunch and a tour with Senior Vice President Bill Boyd. Next, along with their parents, they will attend and be recognized at the Joe Sutter dinner, sponsored by the Royal Aeronautical Society, on November 17 at The Museum of Flight.  Hearty congratulations, gentlemen! (FYI that the competition for this year’s Rolls Royce awards was intense with 10 AHS seniors vying for the scholarships. In addition to Jacob and Hunter, the following students are commended for submitting stellar applications—Paula Cieszkiewicz, Wendy Zaballos, Dustin Werran, Allen May, Barrett Estep, Max Wienke, Liam Burke, and Reilly Mulligan.
  • Everyone who participated in AHS’s third annual Fall Advisory Contest!  The Pumpkin winners are:  Kumakura for Best Overall, Dyer for Most School Spirit, and Wombold for Most Creative.  Scarecrow winners are: Wakefield for Best Overall, McComb for Most School Spirit, Katims for Scariest, and Joshi for Most Creative.    Thank you to all who participated in our third annual Fall Advisory Contest!

Report cards were put in the mail last Friday. If you do not receive yours this week, please advise Registrar Kim Sorensen.

VIPs on campus this week include participants of Leadership Tomorrow (LT), an organization that fosters awareness of civic, political, education and other issues within the greater Seattle regions.  Participants apply for admission to this prestigious program which accepts only 72 community leaders each year. Twelve LT participants will visit us on Thursday to learn more about our culture and how we are fulfilling the opportunity gap in STEM education and within the global workforce.

This Thursday evening from 6:00-9:00 p.m. is our first evening Information Program for 8th Graders & Parents.  Thank you in advance to students who will be assisting staff members and participating on the panel from 7:45-8:45 p.m. I am requesting that all staff and students be in the gym by 6:00 p.m. sharp for opening remarks before our guests tour classrooms. Thank you in advance for your ambassadorship!

As a reminder, there will be no school next Monday in observance of Veteran’s Day. If you know someone who served in the military, I encourage you to give a special thanks to them in honor of their courage, bravery and patriotism.

Cheers to learning! I am honored to be your principal.
