Principal’s Message
Thanks to
everyone, for making last week go so smoothly after a two-week break. Special thanks to all ambassadors who
participated in hosting Pacific Middle School students last Tuesday and to
staff who opened their doors during the tours. Feedback was positive from our
visitors, and I was proud of each of you.
Applications
for the Class of 2018 are coming in each day, in huge stacks, for Ms. Thatcher
to sort and record in the student database.
All apps are due by January 31.
We are reviewing them as we receive completed packets, and we intend to
begin interviewing in February so that we can notify students of their
application status by April 1. The schedule for interviewing will be as follows*:
·
Tuesdays
from 3:45-8:00 p.m.: February 4, 18,
& 25 & March 4 & 18 (pizza dinner served at each)
·
Saturdays
from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.—February 22 and March 22 (pizza lunch served at
each)
*This
schedule could change based on number of applicants and our ability to keep up
with application review.
Our
interview format will be the same as last year, with an orientation session for
applicants, followed by group interviews. Student ambassadors will share their
college and career goals in the orientation session and also serve as an
interviewer with a staff facilitator. We
are, therefore, looking for students from each grade level, 9-12, whose goals directly
align with the vision and mission of our school. As explained in the instructions to student
applicants for the Class of 2018, “We are
looking for students who are passionate about aviation and flight, aerospace
and space exploration, and related technical fields. Students who are interested
in engineering (mechanical, electrical, aerospace, robotics, systems, civil),
the sciences (computer, astrophysics, space) and technology- and
innovation-driven fields fit well in our school. Students who are motivated to
pursue a science, technology, engineering, or math (STEM) education and career
pathway directly related to aviation and aerospace are ideal candidates.”
If
your goals for college and career match those we are seeking in our applicants,
and you would like to help with the student interview and selection process, please see Mrs. Hiranaka. She will
have a short form for you to complete that includes your goals and dates that
you will be able to serve as an ambassador.
We thank you in advance for your willingness to serve in this very
important role.
Mr. Mullis, our night
custodian, returned to work last week after being out for an injury. Welcome back, Mr. Mullis!
Congratulations
to our Speech & Debate team who competed this past Friday and Saturday at the
University of Puget Sound. Three first time competing teams in Public Forum debate did very well.
Jacob Simmons and Karl Neilsen tied for 5th place in junior division after
winning octofinals, and Bryant Nguyen and Lona Medhane took the same place in
novice division. Emily Ready and Nicole Diaz made it all the way to semi-finals
in novice debate as well! Additionally, Brain Huynh took second overall in
junior Congressional debate, his first time ever competing!
Our FTC Robotics team has now completed its competitive season, thanks to the support of so many—Coach Stephanie Morrison, mentors, FRC team members, parents, and others. This team deserves to celebrate the successes of its very first year of operation. According to Coach Morrison, “The team performed great on Friday, but after some control system problems on Saturday, we will not be advancing to state finals. I am extremely proud of the students and their hard work, spirit and positive attitude all season, and especially in the face of adversity.”
We
celebrate the work and life of Dr.
Martin Luther King this week, with an assembly on Tuesday. Monday,
January 20, is the official holiday in Dr. King’s honor, so there will be no
school.
As
a reminder, first semester ends January
24, so I encourage you to make every minute of learning count! There will be no school on Monday, January 27, allowing time for teachers to
grade projects and exams and submit grades.
Enjoy
your week of learning and opportunities. Be sure to read the Announcements for
further information that may be of interest and benefit to you.
Honored
to be your principal—
Reba G.

End of Course Exams: RAHS will be administering End-of-course (EOC) Make-up

they are unsure whether they need to attend an EOC Make-up.
Once again, meeting state standard
on the EOC exams is a graduation requirement. The EOC Make-up exams are only

Highline Schools Community
Meetings: Highline’s
student population is growing for the first time in over a decade. This
growth presents some challenges and we need your input on a solution. We
are now out of classroom space in elementary schools and have no room for
growth. The state is offering additional funding to lower class sizes for
K-3 next year. If we are unable to create classroom space, we may have to
turn down as much as $2.2 million in state funding. We also have a number
of schools that are 50 to 90 years old and in need of major repairs or replacement.
We are working on solutions and want to get community feedback. Please
join us at a community meeting to learn about potential solutions and share
your feedback:

Winter Weather Emergency
Information: TV,
Radio, and our HighlineSchools.org website will have the most current emergency
information regarding school delays or closures. Also,
parents, students, staff and community members can sign up to receive emergency
information about Highline Public Schools through FlashAlert.
This includes breaking news and weather related information. By signing up,
people can registered up to three email and/or cell phone text addresses to
receive the latest information. Visit FlashAlert
to create an account. Please do not call the Highline District offices,
transportation office or your student’s school office. Calls divert staff from responding to the emergency
situation.
Flight
Design Competition:
The General Aviation Manufacturers Association and Build a Plane are sponsoring a nationwide aircraft design
competition for high school students. The winning team of students will build a
Glasair Sportsman in two weeks.
The competition is intended to promote
science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education in high schools.
Teams will use specialized curricula that include flight simulation software to
modify the design of a Glasair Sportsman that seats four adults while flying a
specific mission profile. Their entries will compete in a virtual fly-off and
will be scored on aerodynamic and performance parameters.
The winning team, plus a teacher and a
chaperone, will travel to Glasair Aviation headquarters in Arlington, Wash., June 16 to 28 to
assemble a Sportsman using Glasair’s Two Weeks to Taxi program.
Schools can register for the competition
now through Feb. 14 to receive the Fly to Learn curricula and software. Entries
are due by April 30, and the winner will be announced May 8. To register
and get more information, go to http://www.aopa.org/News-and-Video/All-News/2014/January/07/gama-build-a-plane-contest.aspx.
Student Achievement:
At the Seattle Civil Air
Patrol squadron's holiday party last December, Evan Hobbs received a significant
acknowledgement and award for "cadet of the year" along with a
promotion to senior master sergeant. He
also earned a 3-year service award/ribbon and an additional recruitment
ribbon. Evan also attended flight encampment over the summer and received
a merit scholarship for flight training at Rainier Flight which will help him
earn his private pilot's license by the end of the upcoming summer.
Another highlight to the
evening was when Owen Yeasting was
promoted from an enlisted rank to officer as second lieutenant.
Both Evan and Owen worked
very hard for these accomplishments and were wonderfully commended at the
event. Congratulations, gentlemen!

From Trinkets to
Body Parts – 3D
Printing – January 15
The
limits of 3D printing have expanded beyond the attention of hobbyists and
enthusiasts. Imagine a young boy, born without fingers, lifting and grasping
with a 3D printed hand or a woman speaking for the first time in years with a
3D printed jawbone. Astronauts will soon produce repair parts in space. And
within a decade, doctors will transplant 3D printed kidneys and
hearts. Come learn how 3D printing, also known as additive manufacturing,
is a catalyst for mass customization and rapid, collaborative product development.

aviation in one place!! This is a two-day aviation oriented event hosted
at the Western Washington Fairgrounds in Puyallup. Raisbeck Aviation High
School will have a booth at this event. We will be displaying some of our

mentors. This is a great exposure for us and a way to promote the school
to the community at large. More information can be found at their website
at www.washington-aviation.org. We
will need students and parents to man the booth during the two days.
Students can earn community service time for this work. Please sign up on
