Principal’s Message:
Congratulations to all students who were selected to attend this year’s Pathfinder Gala on October 20 at the Museum of Flight.  More students applied this year (131) than in any previous year, making it very challenging to select the 86 that we have been authorized to send.  If you were not selected, I hope you will apply again next year and also stay tuned for additional opportunities to attend gala-type events.  One such event will be the Joe Sutter Dinner Lecture on November 16.  Please see Ms. Burr if interested.  (Reminder to those selected for Pathfinder: Unless you have approval from me or Ms. Burr, you are expected to attend the Etiquette Training session after school this Thursday!  See you there.)

Congratulations, too, to all the freshmen who ran for class captain!  The names of those selected are in the ‘Announcements’ section of the NOTAM.  I would imagine that there were only a few votes separating the candidates.  It was obvious that most of the speeches had been thoughtfully crafted and that all candidates  were truly proud to be part of the AHS community.

Spirit was palpable throughout these ‘ole halls of Aviation High School last week, and I’m delighted to learn that the dance at Galvin Flying Service on Saturday evening was such a success.  Congratulations to the ASB and everyone involved in planning it.  The ASB Leadership Team is to be congratulated for making Drops of Jupiter a hit for the 216 students attending.  Thank you chaperones for making the evening successful: Ms. Fitzpatrick, Wayne and Theda Hiranaka, Ms. Carper, Ms. Jones Gunn, Mr. Peterson, Mr. McComb, Mr. Shiroma, and Mr. Kelly.  A heartfelt thank you goes out to the members of the Galvin Flying team who helped to clean up after the event with their special equipment.

A gentle reminder: First quarter ends October 26.  I encourage you to make every minute of learning count!  Seek help from teachers if you need it.  Remember that tutoring is available after school.  You are developing a college-going transcript.  Learning counts…and while I oftentimes wish we didn’t issue letter grades, fact is that we do…and college admissions reps notice.  Do your absolute best and know that there are supports at AHS to help you—just ask!

Enjoy another astonishing week of learning.  As always, I am honored to be your principal.

Also, thank you so much to all the AHS students and staff who participated in our first Spirit Week! We are glad that you all showed us your spirit and got pumped for the dance!

Attendance Reminder for Parents and Students:   Attendance line 206-878-1259
A phone call is REQUIRED to the school each day of an absence AND a parent signed note is REQUIRED upon the student’s return to school in order for the absence to be excused.

New WA state law for coding student absences:  Beginning this academic year, schools are required to mark absences due to family vacation as UNEXCUSED.   This is change from previous practice.   We ask for your understanding and cooperation and want to remind families that excused absences are permitted for illness, religious reasons, and school-related functions.

Mentor, John Somerville, is sponsoring 15-20 AHS students to attend the AIAA Technical Symposium during the day on November 3rd.  Panelists include:  Jason Andrews, Andrews Space, Erika Wagner, Blue Origin, Chris Lewicki, Planetary Resources, Chris McCoy, Boeing 787 Propulsion Flight Test.  You’ll have to provide your own transportation as this isn’t an AHS sponsored event.  Some AHS students are already registered to attend, but we will take the first 20 to let Julie Burr know their availability and interest.  Email Ms. Burr or stop by her office to let her know of your interest- soon.
