The Principal’s Message
Think about breaking
records. Within aviation, record-setting
activities are chronicled for distance, speed, altitude, time to climb, greatest payload, and efficiency. At RAHS, the Class of 2016 smashed an existing record for scholarship. Last week, the College Board released the names of the nation’s leading seniors determined through the National Merit Scholarship Program. In this announcement, there are nine RAHS seniors: Hannah Baker, Cooper Brown, Britton Coffey, Natalie Fuller, Jared Gibson, Noah Kramer, Karl Nielsen, Nathan Schulz, and Kevin Zhang, identified with the top three percent of high-school students. This
is a record for RAHS! Please
join me in congratulating our Commended Scholars!
Students, your peers are setting
records, and next month is your opportunity to connect with a special class of
trailblazers known as the Pathfinders.
The Pathfinders Awards honor individuals or teams from the Pacific Northwest
for significant contributions to aerospace development. Through our Career Center, you
can apply for a Pathfinder internship and personally connect with one of these
amazing aviation pioneers. Our 2015-2016
Pathfinder interns: John Copland, Senay Emmanuel, Rohan Mathew, Vince Paddon, Jacob
Simmons, Isha Singh, and Stella Sisson, kick started their work last April.
Under the direction of Peter Morton,
former VP of the Boeing Company, they began studying the life and achievements
of their assigned Pathfinder, and will formally introduce them at the October
24 event. If you are interested in attending the Pathfinder Awards, please
check the Career Center section
below for more information. The names of this year’s Pathfinders, and their
assigned interns, are followed by a dollop-sized introduction. I look forward to an inspiring evening with
this year’s Pathfinders—Col. Michael P.
Anderson, Elling Halvorson, and Allan Mulally!
Col.
Michael P. Anderson—Senay
Emmanuel and Isha Singh
Astronaut Lt. Col. Michael Anderson set
his eyes on aviation and aerospace at an early age. Inspired by the Apollo 11
Moon landing, “Star Trek” and “Lost in Space”, Anderson fulfilled his dream
of becoming an astronaut. He was also academically motivated and excelled in
the sciences; a future career for NASA was the perfect combination for
his interests and talents. In 1981, Anderson graduated with honors from the
University of Washington with degrees in both physics and astronomy and was
commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force. He logged over 3,000
flight hours for the U.S. Air Force. On top of his Air Force duties he found
time to earn a masters in physics from Creighton University, making him a competitive
candidate for an astronaut spot at NASA.
Elling
Halvorson—Vince
Paddon and Jacob Simmons
A legendary entrepreneur, Elling
Halvorson has had a significant impact on vertical lift practices in industries
including construction, engineering, travel and tourism. After completing his
education at Willamette University, Halvorson coupled a degree in economics
with “what you might call a minor in civil engineering” as he puts it. He
immediately went to work for the family business in construction, and was challenged
by a variety of contracts— most notably, the Echo Summit Microwave Project. For
this project he purchased his first helicopter, a Bell 47-G3B1 to carry workers
and light construction materials through treacherous mountain terrain.
Specializing in remote area projects with challenging logistics, Halvorson took
pride in mitigating risks through creativity and innovation. His use of
helicopters to transport workers to work sites in the Grand Canyon led to the
creation of a new industry; helicopter tourism. Grand Canyon Helicopters and
its sister companies have opened amazing vistas and spectacular experiences to
the public.
Allan Mulally—John
Copeland and Stella Sisson
Serving
as President and CEO of the Ford Motor Company, Boeing Commercial Airplanes
(BCA), and President of Boeing Defense and Space group, Alan Mulally has
received worldwide recognition for his leadership and groundbreaking industry
strategy. Fascinated with the art and science of flight, Mulally became a pilot in his teens and pursued studies in
aeronautics and astronautics engineering, earning a Bachelors and Masters of
Science from University of Kansas. In 1969, Mulally joined Boeing and advanced
through a number of notable engineering and project leadership positions
involving the 727, 737, 747, 757, 767, 777 and 787 airplanes. Mulally became
known for his ability to tackle air safety challenges, earning the 1978 Boeing
Employee of the Year award.
Rohan Mathew—is the logistics intern for
Pathfinder, and is mentored by Peter Morton.
Finally, I look
forward to seeing our families during the Evening
of Learning this Thursday. An Evening of Learning is Raisbeck Aviation High School’s
version of
what other schools might refer to
as
“open house” or
“curriculum night.” The program is designed for you to
experience what
your
student is learning in class each day.
Students, please complete your Class Schedule by filling in the Course
Name Teacher’s Name to assist your parents as they navigate their way through
the evening.
In addition to attending
classes, we
are
offering one session prior to the 6:00PM
start of the program. If your
schedule
permits, consider attending Helping your Student Succeed at RAHS from 5:00-5:45 p.m. which will be facilitated
by Ms.
Carper, our counselor, and staff.
Parents, please bring the
completed schedule with you on Thursday evening—thank you.

NEW ANNOUNCEMENTS
Do you have a passion for the Boeing
Company, Part 2!
There is
a once-in-a lifetime, but tentative opportunity to connect with Boeing VIPs and
leaders on September 23rd.
This request is for 20-30 students—must be a U.S. citizen, and
interested in attending an all-day event at the Everett Boeing facility. See
Mr. Kelly for more details by Tuesday AM.
Flying
it Forward
On September 26th and 27th, the Museum of Flight is “Flying it
Forward,” offering free flights to girls and young women who have never flown
in a small aircraft
before (so this excludes airliners, of course). Thanks to the generosity of a
volunteer pilots, we are offering a limited number of 15 minute flights from
the Museum between 9am and 5pm each day of the event. Passengers must be between 7 and 18 years old
and have never flown in a small airplane before. Our pilots are
all certified private pilots and flight instructors. The rider and adults
accompanying them to the Museum will be offered free admission for the day.
Registration is for specific time blocks each day, and precise scheduling will
be determined at check in day-of. This event is highly dependent on weather,
but the forecast looks great! Register now as space is limited! Also, due to
the limited number of seats available, and to ensure the most first flyers get
a chance to fly, adults will be unable to accompany their children on the
flights. Each aircraft seats between one and three passengers.
first-time female flyer ages 7-18. More registration space will be added as
more pilots volunteer for the event.
Registration
space is limited, so encourage potential flyers to sign up ASAP! Please direct
any questions you have to Cale Wilcox at cwilcox@Museumoffflight.org.
Laptop Insurance
Parents
who are interested in purchasing insurance for the laptop computers can elect
to do so through the Worth Ave. Group, http://www.worthavegroup.com/.
The Worth Ave. Group is familiar with our school and laptop program, and
will answer all questions pertaining to coverage and liability. Please contact a representative from the Worth
Ave. Group to request information about insurance premiums. Thank you for your patience and understanding
as we migrate to the new policy forms, e.g., policy 2026. Laptop insurance is
no longer offered by the HSD school district.
RAHS Dress Code Policy amendment: Camouflage wear has been added
to the list of unacceptable dress at RAHS.
The only exception to this rule is on school spirit days!
